The Cameras Anyone Could Watch

A condominium board in Szeged had installed a budget camera system years earlier through a low-cost vendor nobody remembered choosing, and had never once changed the default login the equipment shipped with.

During a routine review prompted by a resident's question about who could actually access the footage, the board discovered the cameras were reachable directly from the open internet, still running factory-default credentials that anyone could find with a basic search. Years of hallway and entrance footage had effectively been sitting unprotected the entire time: residents coming and going, visible license plates, delivery patterns. The board was alarmed at how easily this could have been exploited and had no idea how to properly evaluate whether their new system would actually be secure rather than just newer. They contacted AION Networks.

AION removed the exposed hardware entirely and replaced it with a UniFi Protect camera system built on a segmented network: cameras placed on an isolated VLAN with no direct path to the open internet, individually authenticated credentials, and remote access available only through an encrypted, access-controlled connection for authorized staff.

The board now has documented proof, for the first time, of exactly who can view the building's footage and how. Their previous system could never have demonstrated that. AION continues to manage firmware updates and network security for the system under an ongoing service agreement.
